Support, Guidance and… FUN!

Lisa & Ryan Dancing!

Hot off the press!

Lisa and Ryan – just married Saturday June 26th – sent me an email to let me know how their big day went and included this adorable picture.

Lisa looks oh-so-sexy in her gorgeous gown with the perfect flower in her long flowing curls and Ryan is the quintessential adoring husband in his dashing white suit.

Hi Jillian!

We wanted to send you a quick pic of us dancing as a sneak peak before we get the video back.

Our wedding was simply magical.

And SO many people complimented us on our first dance.

It went beautifully and we greatly appreciate your support and guidance with our fun, fun lessons.  We will send you a video clip as soon as we receive it.

Cheers, Lisa & Ryan

Lisa and Ryan danced on their big day to “L-O-V-E” and also learned dance routines of five to eight figures in merengue, cha cha, swing and more foxtrot to their second fav song “Feeling Good” to wow their guests all through their reception with their fun and kicky couple dancing.

I can’t wait to see their video and hear more about their fabulous wedding and reception.  They were such a wonderful couple to work with and I shall think of them often, especially when I’m teaching dance in the early morning!

Here’s their sweet thank you note and a picture of their gifts to me.  I got a bottle of  Old Moon zin that they served their guests and a large plant of what they did smaller for guest favors.  :-)

Jillian,

Thank you for being the most patient, persistent, OUTRAGEOUS dance teacher ever!

Your guidance the past few months has meant more to us than you know.  We feel so much more prepared for our big day.

We’re going to blow them away!!

Many thanks, Lisa & Ryan

Lovey Gifts

Happy honeymooning in St. Lucia Lisa and Ryan!

And may you dance up a storm with your merengue and cha cha in the romantic tropical evenings…

You’re Timeless To Me

Every now and then I get a couple who really wants to do something different!

Sandra and Mike were just such a couple.

Read on to find out about their dream first dance.

They loved the song You’re Timeless to Me from the musical Hairspray and decided to adapt the lyrics of it to their relationship and the year 2010, record themselves singing it and come to me to choreograph and block moves and dancing to this almost five minute ditty.

Click here to see this fabulously funny rendition of it on YouTube from the movie with Christoper Walken and John Travolta.

Well, needless to say, after about ten or so rehearsals and a heap of practicing they were absolutely show-stopping!

They mimed movement to the lyrics of their song and in the middle of it danced a full foxtrot, tango AND waltz with zesty abandon.  I can’t wait for a video of their dance from their wedding so I can post it for you here.

They said they nailed it and I believe it from all the fun and hard work we put into the practicing.

Here’s their testimonial and a lovely picture of them on their happiest day ever.

Jillian!

We had to get back to you to tell you how our dances [they also did a regular first dance to At Last - can you believe it?] went on Saturday!

WE NAILED IT!

We did not mess up at all!  They were beautiful!  What a surprise the second dance was to our guests!  They were in awe!  We can’t wait to see it on video!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

It was all because of you we did so well to entertain our guests.  I wish you could have been there!  Rose was great getting that chair on the dance floor for Mike and then removing it.

People were in shock that the CD was us singing!  Once we find out how to send you some pics our friends took of us dancing we will send them!  The nun surprise was fantastic!

It was the perfect wedding!

It was a dream wedding.

Thank you so very much!  Hope to see you soon!

“Blue-tiful” First Dance

Well if you’ve picked up any wedding rags lately you’ve probably seen the 2010 trend earmarked by Shane McMurray of The Wedding Report (theweddingreport.com) and the verdict is in for wedding color theme for 2010.

It’s going to blue, blue and blue!

Any shade of blue… from the lightest, palest blue to the hottest tourquoise blue to the deepest azure ocean blue.

Brides are choosing blues for their colors.

You’ll see it on the bridesmaids, on the bride’s feet, on the table decorations, on the cake, on the mother of the bride, on the bridal bouquet and… on the groom!

With that in mind how can you keep your color in your first dance?

Here are a few song choices to get you thinking.  (Click on the links to see lyrics and hear YouTubes.)

“Blue Suede Shoes” by Elvis Presley (YouTube)

“Blue Moon” by The Marcels (YouTube)

“Blue Hawaii” by Elvis Presley/Frank Sinatra (YouTube – Elvis)

“Blue (Da Ba Dee)” by Eiffel 65

The Blue Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss Jr.

Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin

True Blue by Madonna

Blue Eyes by Cary Brothers (YouTube)

Crystal Blue Persuasion by Tommy James and The Shondells (YouTube)

Mr. Blue Sky by E.L.O. (YouTube)

and for you retro eccentrics out there…

“Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire for the Roses” by Joni Mitchell

**

And don’t forget you can always shine a beautiful blue gobo on the floor with your initials intertwined in it to dance on or how about giving the groom a pocketful of blue confetti he can throw up in the air to start your magical first dance?

Whatever your choices I know that you’ll have good luck with blue since we all know the charming old Victorian saying…

Something old, Something new, Something borrowed, Something blue…

Happy Wedding and let me know if I can help you with your “blue-tiful” first dance.  ;-)

Be An Early Bird…

It’s January and lots of inquiries are coming in for first dance lessons right now!  Maybe it’s the rain deluge we’ve been having and everyone is stuck inside and looking at the internet… but regardless…

The excitement is contagious and I can’t wait to work with these fantastic brides, grooms, moms, dads and wedding party participants.

2010 looks like a “bumper year” for weddings!

I’ve had questions about father/daughter dances, first dances utilizing musical numbers, wedding party group dances and beautiful bride and groom waltzes, swings, foxtrots and rumbas.

So far May and July are going to be big months for saying, I Do.

The average sized wedding is coming in somewhere between 100-175 guests.

Brides and grooms seem to be trimming their guest list so they don’t have to trim their wish list!

Popular right now…

The bride’s shoes in a color to match her bridesmaids dresses and her wedding colors.

Currently I have one dancing bride wearing gorgeous deep purple high heeled sandals with a rhinestone circle and another wearing red pumps to kick off a Valentine’s Day wedding!

Grooms are getting even more of that traditional “to do” list to do than in years passed.  At least 50% of my calls and emails have been from grooms this month;  fitting since they’ll be doing the leading in the first dance, I say!

So if you were thinking about dance lessons but putting off getting some info and firming up some evening or weekend dates… the time is now!

Be an “early bird who gets the worm” and email me today or call me at 949.400.7347 and start getting some dance figures and technique in your muscle memory today.

Happy almost February!

“Pimp Your Bride”

I simply can’t resist this!

Just last Friday evening I was out on the dance floor, as the sun made its way into the Pacific ocean, working with my brand new couple and their wonderful wedding dance.

She’s a beautiful Irish lass with red/blond hair and he’s a joy to work with, with an incredibly great dance attitude; and they both brought leather soled shoes on their first lesson!  Neither have ever danced before and that night they were ready to jump in with both feet and get going.

We were learning some beautiful fluid figures to move across the floor, some sweeping boxes and some fun figures in place and all of a sudden he came up with the best one liner I’ve heard in a long time!

After “cuddling” up his bride he zinged her out in a whip and I looked over to see this handsome groom “flick” his imaginary tux shirt collar.   I think I’m going to do this every time, he said with a smile.

I’m going to pimp my bride with this fancy move and then flick my collar like Wow, look what I just did. :-)

I couldn’t stop laughing.  It was great!  So guys – why not, “Pimp Your Bride” and do a little fancy footwork in that first dance?  Take some dance lessons together and we’ll come up with the moves that will make your crowd cheer.

She’ll look hot and you’ll feel like the coolest guy around…

Happy Almost 2010!

New Year’s resolutions come in all shapes and sizes.  I’m sure you’ve got a few of your own ready for 2010!  There are always the tried and true good old standbys:  lose weight, make more money, travel, worry less and find a fun hobby.

But what about something that could combine all of the above?  Now that would be one heck of a New Year’s Resolution!  How about dance lessons???

  • Dancers can lose weight…
  • Dancing can get those endorphins going which can make for happier people in the workplace and who knows - ripe for that promotion…
  • Dancing brings out the travel bug to find fun social spots for doing your latest steps…
  • If you’re dancing, you can only think about the figures and your movement not stressing about the latest…
  • And dancing could be your next fun hobby…

It’s that time of year and I’m getting lots of inquiries from 2010 brides and grooms and also people who just want to take up dancing!  It’s easy to get started and really all you need are your feet, some leather soled dance shoes and a willingness to learn.  So what are you waiting for?  Oh, that’s right two more days!  Well, let’s start 2010 right!

Have a wedding?  Have a special event? Have a desire to do something fun and frolicsome with your mate?   Email me and we’ll start that music and get you moving.  Until then, I found this quote rather amusing since it hits both sides of the coin:

“An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in.  A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.”  — Bill Vaughn

Happy New Year to all from Jillian of OurWeddingDance.com

Grooms Get Points With First Dance!

A little while ago I wrote this article for a publication and I’d like to share it with you since I think a lot of grooms deserve to be praised for even attempting a first dance in the first place!

##

Dancing.

The very word can bring fear into a perfectly normal groom’s life.

Guys know that girls like to dance and, let’s face it, most guys learn to dance to attract a girl.  So what’s the point in learning to dance once you’ve got the girl?  Answer: The First Dance at your wedding reception.

Probably, given a choice, most grooms would opt out of the first dance and move right on through the reception.  But the first dance can be a great opportunity for grooms to get those extra “love bank” points that they can use as collateral later on!

Grooms come through the door of a dance studio with two very real fears: 1) They will not be able to do a partnered dance and 2) They will look very silly trying.

But, the whole experience can be a very “liberating” one for them since they will be in-charge of the dance.  Because the man leads and the lady follows, grooms find out they can dance with a partner and they don’t look silly because the couple then moves as one across the floor.

During private classes, instruction should be kept in every-day language with work on the dance frame, the couple’s posture, simple walking steps to their song and basic dance patterns.  This way a three-way “creation process” can start that will eventually produce choreography that the groom can remember and the bride can look beautiful dancing.

Brides and grooms need to start their first dance as soon as they can spare the time.

Couples can master simple routines in foxtrot, waltz, rumba, tango, and night club two-step in about five to fifteen lessons.

More elaborate first dances with props and costume changes and first dances that combine two or more dance types may take a little longer to feel second nature.

Personalization is the underlying theme with today’s weddings and the first dance can be as personal as the bride and groom want it to be.

No matter what you think you might like to do or even if you have no ideas whatsoever and just want some help “not looking stupid”, a professional dance instructor who specializes in bride and groom first dances can work with you to create your dream first dance.

With time and patience you can have a dance to remember and even keep dancing for other special occasions all your married life.

Happy Holiday Shopping and don’t forget to include a few dance lessons on your New Year’s Resolutions list!

She’s Got A Way About Her…

Russ and Ruth Wedding Dancing

Russ and Ruth Wedding Dancing

I’m always overjoyed to receive testimonials and pictures from my graduated couples and this a.m. I was doubly happy to not only receive a wonderful email but from a couple who just got married last week!

Russ and Ruth came to me with not much time before their big day.  But we managed to get in a  two hour lesson block and kept it simple and elegant.

Soon Russ was boxing like he’d been dancing all his life and Ruth was smiling like the brightest star in the Fall night sky.

Here’s what they had to say after their big day…

Jillian,

People told us it was the best wedding they ever went to.  We had a great time.  Our dance routine was flawless.  Even the dip.

Thanks again.  Russ and Ruth

And beforehand…

Thank you for making our very first dance lesson [ever] comfortable and relaxed.  We already practiced our routine last night and found your notes to be very useful.

Fall Wedding Season

Well, it’s back to school time and the last of my Summer brides and grooms have gotten married.  It was a whirlwind of a season and amid the hustle and bustle and blast of summer heat we had fun!

But now Fall is in the air and I must say I’ve watched over the years as Fall weddings have become more and more popular.  I don’t know if it’s the recession or global warming but a lot of my couples have told me that they feel it’s just all around better for everyone to have that big day in  September, October or November.

It’s my favorite time of year… I love the sounds, sights and smells of Fall.  Just yesterday I made homemade apple raisin spice cookies as if willing the weather to change and the leaves to turn.

Right now I’ve got a lot of happy Fall brides and grooms, dads and daughters and moms and dads dancing away for that big day and here’s a sampling of what some of them are working on…

Bride and Groom First Dance

Getting married September 19th 2009 at the Crown Plaza this bride and groom are dancing to the song “Only You” by Josh Radin.  They’re coming down to the wire and this wonderful couple, who have known each other since they were teenagers, have combined a foxtrot with a night club 2-step to show off a traditional look to their crowd but also have the fun of an intimate dance that feels cozy with each other.

Getting married October 9th 2009 this bride and groom will be dancing to “By Your Side” by Sade at the Westin South Coast Plaza.  They started early since they’ve got challenging work schedules to juggle and they’re on their fourth lesson tonight and doing a great job with their four foxtrot  and three rumba moves.  His frame is impeccable and she is following now with graciousness and style.

Father/Daughter Dance

This dad and daughter are doing a dear dance to “I Loved Her First” on September 27th 2009.  They are actually partners in a business together and I have to say that if their business partnership is as fun and fullfilling as their dance partnership well then they are rich indeed!  She follows well with her tinkling laugh breaking out every couple of minutes as her dad masterfully leads her through their simple but lovely dance.  They agree on just about everything from what steps to learn to the order of their choreography and I can tell they’re two peas from a perfect pod!
